Rafaela Vasquez is the backup driver from the deadly Uber self-driving car incident. The video at the end of this article shows the moment Rafaela’s Uber taxi struck Elaine Herzberg who was killed in the accident.
Rafaela Vasquez Is A Convicted Armed Robber
Rafaela Vasquez is a 44-year-old convicted armed robber. She spent 4 years in prison for armed robbery and making false statements when obtaining unemployment benefits. Second chances are a vital part of the nation’s criminal justice system and Vasquez passed Uber’s background test before being hired.
Turns out the "driver" of the driverless Uber that killed someone was a convicted felon who served almost four years in prison on an attempted armed robbery charge AND was born Rafael Vasquez, but is now RafaelA Vasquez.
I wonder if the car was an automatic or manual tranny.

Rafaela aka Rafael Vasquez
Uber might want to stop trying to make excuses. In the tweet above, the company’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Sedlak claims that Rafael and Rafaela are not the same person. She was born Rafael but changed her name to Rafaela.
Rafaela Vasquez Was Texting
Phoenix New Times reports that Rafael aka Rafaela was texting while she was in the car. The video shows her looking down at her mobile device and then she’s seen in a state of shock as the car hits Elaine.
Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir initially stated that the Uber vehicle most like wouldn’t be found at fault but the video tells a different story. If Vasquez would have been paying attention she would have seen Elaine crossing the street with her bike and could have avoided the accident.
