Three years ago, Paulo del Valle (@paulodelvalle) started the My Instagram Logo project, inspiring thousands of creators to remix our icon in wildly creative ways. Paulo, who lives in São Paulo, used more than 400 flowers to make his remix of our app’s new look. “I went to the biggest flower shop in Rio de Janeiro and bought half of their stock for Mother’s Day. Then I got home and I had no idea how I was going to do it,” he explains. Eight hours later, he had something beautiful. Photo by @paulodelvalle
Norwegian photographer Stian Klo (@stianmklo) does not need to leave his living room to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. Capturing them, however, is a little more complex. “It’s a lot of trial and error and taking chances,” says Stian. Once the right conditions are in place — a solar storm paired with clear skies — Stian goes out in search of his ideal setting. “I compose my shots as regular landscape shots, and the aurora is just the icing on the cake,” he says. Stian also welcomes the challenge of taking photos when a landscape is transformed by ice and snow. “It forces the photographer to work the scene,” he explains. “The compositions are less obvious, and you really have to push boundaries.” Photo by @stianmklo
Every week, we look back and highlight some of our favorite emerging voices across the globe — like this photo captured on the island of Java by Rendi Thanthawi (@rerendii) while exploring waterfalls. “I love the clear water, the beautiful scenery and the amazing bright day,” Rendi says. 5. Creativity at its finest.
#WHPnocturnal asked community members to make creative images and videos at night, like this one by Dominic Liam Mayland (@dominicliam) from Athens, Greece. “I wanted to create something different. I wanted to capture people’s imagination,” Dominic explains. “I love to push the boundaries. I have created a style that very few others do, and I’m constantly changing the way I do it.” Follow along as we feature some of our favorite submissions throughout the week, and check out more at blog.instagram.com. It all started with one baby camel. Three years later, globe-trotting adventure photographer Allan Dixon (@daxon) continues to take selfies with wildlife, sometimes relaxing with them for hours before a photo is taken. “Patience is key in getting so close,” Allan explains. “I think they can sense how I feel and know I have no desire to harm them.” Allan grew up in Ireland and is currently traveling in Australia where his favorite animal, the quokka, lives. “It’s hard to believe that an animal the size of a rabbit, with the body of a kangaroo and a face of a bear exists in real life,” Allan says. “They have a permanent smile across their face and are very curious when you come say hi.” Photo by @daxon
A gentle melody echoes across the still, crisp landscapes of German photographer and pianist Maximilian Münch (@muenchmax) and, if you look and listen closely, you can almost hear it. In a gallery as carefully composed as a musical arrangement, the 23-year-old intentionally uses line and color to connect each spectacular vista: rock spurs point toward the horizon in an adjacent image, and treetops melt into a lake’s surface in another. Based in Berlin, but frequently traveling to European destinations and abroad, Max says, “With every picture I put down a small composition on paper, a new note that will somehow lead me to the next — wherever this may be.” Photo by @muenchmax
