Bhandari was diving with a group of 18 people near Cocos Island.  The area is known for its hammerhead sharks but in the last few years, numerous tiger sharks have been spotted.

Unlike great whites, tiger sharks do not swim away after they attack.  This explains why Bhandari's diving instructor was also attacked.  The instructor noticed the shark and tried to scare it away but it swam directly towards Rohina.  The 26-year-old instructor tried to help Rohina and also got bitten.  Bhandari was dragged from the Pacific Ocean but could not be saved.
