“It’s a fu*ked up world!” In his stunning new music video “F.U.W.,” Empire‘s Jussie Smollett lets out all of his pent-up frustrations surrounding the current state of our nation; viscerally attacking the Trump administration and its horrendous policies. In the gorgeously shot black and white video, the singer/actor uses compelling images to evoke the need for human rights and equality.

In the video, Smollett brings to light the emotions that many of us across the country have been dealing with since the horror that was Election Night last November. However, instead of focusing solely on Trump, Smollett is careful to redirect his listeners to the things that actually matter. Black Lives Matter, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and the Pipeline at Standing Rock are all focal points in the music video.

This isn’t the first time that Smollett has spoken out against oppression. Through all of the drama and fanfare that goes down on Empire, the show has been consistent about putting out music that speaks to our times. A standout fan favorite from this current season is “Need Freedom” featuring Sierra McClain. In this current climate, we feel that artists and those with platforms have a responsibility to stand up for those who are being cast aside because of their race, religious practices, sexual orientation, or disability. Smollett has proven that he’s going to continue to show up and speak out.

“F.U.W.” comes in the midst of an already rough week for Trump and his posse. Legendary rapper Snoop Dogg released a satirical music video where he shoots a clown-like Trump in the head. Trump addressed the video by claiming that Snoop’s career is “failing.” (Obviously, Donald has not seen Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party.) Additionally, hours before his new Muslim ban was supposed to go into effect, a federal judge from Hawaii, trashed it and buried it with receipts causing him to rant and rave at a rally in Nashville, Tennessee.
Trump might still be in the White House, but artists like Jussie Smollett continue to prove that there will always be a path for resistance.
