Durags are very similar to the scarves black women wore on their heads during the United States' slavery period. Prior to the 1990s, many African Americans wore women's stockings to bed in an attempt to get waves. The polyester stocking caps became an urban fashion statement by the 1990s.

In the 1990s, durags were worn by some of the most popular rappers and entertainers in the world. Many of the individuals who wore them were not worried about their hairstyles, instead they loved the look.
